Keep Away From Children
Parents in Brookfield, WI have complained their way out of having the Elmbrook School District show President Obama's speech to schoolchildren on Tuesday.

At face value, this isn't shameful at all. After all, it's their community and they should be allowed to run their school district any way they like. If they don't want their children to hear from the President, fine.

What's unacceptable are the reasons they give for sheltering their children from the president.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ran a story about the situation this morning. In that story, Elmbrook School District Superintendent Matt Gibson is quoted as having said, "because we have no opportunity for prior review to determine if it relates to curriculum, is appropriate for all age levels and is nonpartisan regardless of the political party in office."

About 300 words earlier the very same article reminds us that "The White House plans to release the speech online Monday so parents can read it."

Guess that argument doesn't hold much water.

Further examination of the issue leads us to the Journal Sentinel's "What do you think of the controversy?" section. Let's take a look at some of the comments from those inside (and a few from outside) the community...

For once Elmbrook is doing the correct thing. The president should not schedual his speech during school time. He could have schedualed it during the early evening. School is for learning it is not a place for a one sided political forum! This president is losing his popularity and this is not the time or place to try and bolster it. Hats off to Elmbrook!

As a former Wisconsinite, I am Proud of the Elmbrook's school decision. There are too many questionable moves and questionable people involved in this current administration. Motives are to be questioned especially this Van Jones inclusion. What gives with what is going on?

God Bless the Elm Brook School District! Generalissimo Obama won't get to play Hugo Chavez or Fidel Castro or Chairman Mao in yet another school district. We would have kept all of our kids out of school had Elmbrook not made the right decision. It's one small step for liberty - - one giant defeat for statism! 2010 can't get here soon enough so we can throw the Marxists out of office.

I think they are smart. The President should be giving his speech over the regular TV channels so families could watch together. Then the parents and childrn could discuss the content together. Color is not a factor here. Stop using the color card. Remember Hitler went after the school children too.

If you watch any documentaries on the history channel about Hitler, you will see exactly what Obama is doing. Obama has his union thugs, Hitler had his brown shirts. Hitler did away with certain members of society calling them impure, guess what Obama is trying to push down our throats calling it medical reform. The only difference between the two is that Hitler did not need a teleprompter in order to talk.

After reading some of these comments, you have to wonder what's really driving this. I think it's safe to argue that politics is only a small part. There's a lot of irrational rage here.

If President Obama offered to read Goodnight Moon to their children, these people would find some hidden evil in it. They'd probably claim the Old Lady Saying Shhhhh is Stalin, the Three Little Bears Sitting in Chairs are the workers and the Great Green Room represents government oppression.

In short, there's no real logic behind this.
