Admit Ignorance, Introduce Bill
10/27/2009
On October 22nd, the FCC singled its willingness to begin laying out Net Neutrality regulations in order to preserve how the Internet currently, and was originally designed to work. In response, John McCain introduced the "Internet Freedom Act" and issued a press release saying
Now, everybody knows that McCain didn't write this legislation. Hell, he probably never even read it. That being the case, the joke is most definitely on the telecommunications lobby that did. To them, some advice - if you're going to take the time to write a bill, make sure your legislation's senatorial conduit didn't openly admit to complete ignorance of your industry.
This government takeover of the Internet will stifle innovation, in turn slowing our economic turnaround and further depressing an already anemic job market. Outside of health care, the technology industry is the nation's fastest growing job market. Innovation and job growth in this sector of our economy is the key to America's future prosperity. In 2008, while most industries were slashing jobs in the worst economy in nearly 30 years, high tech industries actually added over 77,000 good high-paying jobs. Just this month, Google and Yahoo both released positive earnings reports.'This is an 100% bullshit analysis of the effects Net Neutrality regulations would have on the tech industry. For an accurate take on McCain's "Internet Freedom Act", let's turn PC World columnist Tony Bradley
McCain's bill, the Internet Freedom Act, seeks to do the opposite of what its name implies by ensuring that broadband and wireless providers can discriminate and throttle certain traffic while giving preferential treatment to other traffic. Basically, those in power or those who pay more will have better access. If Bradley has little respect for McCain's credibility on this issue, it's of no surprise. During the 2008 Republican presidential primaries, the technological topic was breached when all the candidates were asked simply, "Mac or PC"? McCain's response:
Neither. I am an illiterate who has to rely on my wife for all the assistance I can get.
