Joke About Domestic Abuse
07/30/2009
Anger provoking too.
Wisconsin advocates for victims of domestic violence are up in arms over a joke published in last month's Reader's Digest. Here's the joke that caused the stir:Police find a man in an apartment holding a 5-iron over a woman's lifeless body. When a detective asks the man how many times he hit her, the man replies, "I don't know. Five ... maybe six ... Put me down for a five."
95% of the population will at least chuckle after hearing this joke. That's just reality. I'll admit it, I did. After some reflection though, yeah, I understand and completely sympathize with those offended.
If a joke isn't about you, your race, your beliefs or your world view, you'll likely find it funny, but try imagining you're the butt of the joke. Put yourself in the shoes of a woman who was a victim of domestic violence. Imagine you haven't confronted your abuser yet and you're trying to muster up the courage. Or imagine you're family was ripped apart because your husband or father took his rage out on you with an object just as frightening as a 5-iron. Now imagine you're escaping from all that through the pages of Reader's Digest and you come across this joke.
Your response would either be a crushing feeling of despair, anger and betrayal or involve a four letter word or two.
Reader's Digest should have considered the effect this joke has on women who are victims of domestic abuse. For not doing so, we Intershame them.
